Virtual Meetings Unplugged: Your Guide to Engaging Like a Boss!

Attending virtual meetings is now as common as apple pie on the 4th of July and they can either be a blast—or a bit of a snooze-fest., no matter if your are on Zoom, Teams or Google Meet. So let’s dive into some fun and easy best practices on how YOU as the attendee can get the most out of these virtual interactions, regardless of its a team chat, a formal networking gathering or a webinar.

1. Prep Like a Pro

Read the Agenda: Give it a quick glance, no one is going to be quizzing you, but knowing what’s on the menu will help you show up prepared. Notes for the organizers… always provide an agenda even if its just a few bullet points!

Tech Check: Test your gear ahead of time—audio, video, and internet.

  • Internet: Hard wired internet will always perform better, but if that is not possible try and be as close to your router as possible

  • Lighting: make sure you are lit from the front (avoid sitting with a large window right behind you!)

  • Equipment: Make sure your camera, speakers and microphone are working properly. Do not be afraid to go into the platform audio and video settings to make adjustments as well!

Bring a treat: Bring a hydrating beverage and a small snack with you!

2. Set the Scene

Find Your Zen Zone: Pick a quiet spot where you won’t be interrupted. Bonus points for a comfy chair!

Background Game: Make sure your background is neat and professional. If it’s not, go for a fun virtual background!

3. Get in the Groove

Create your Own Fun: Don’t be shy! Have your camera on and be ready to jump into the conversation to share your thoughts. Use the chat box to chat the group or send private chats to strategic connections. For example: on your next networking group call, drop your LinkedIn handle in the main chat and private chat with participants you want to connect with. Remember to be human and avoid the sales pitch.

Connect via Webcam: Look at the camera when you speak. It’s like making eye contact and helps everyone feel connected!

Dress to Impress: Even if you’re in your PJs, throw on a nice shirt. It sets the right vibe!

Control that Mute: Keep that mic muted when you’re not speaking to minimize background noise. However, be ready to unmute at a moments notice to be able to jump into the conversation! Pro tip, if you are on Zoom, just hold down the space bar to unmute and let it go to go back on mute!

Punctuality is Key: Join a few minutes early to show you mean business. Nobody likes waiting on latecomers!

Virtual meetings don’t have to be a waist of your precious time! With these simple tools, you will be on your way to leading engaging and productive discussions and networking like a pro. So grab your favorite beverage, settle in, and let’s make those virtual gatherings a blast!
